Gretchen Manor

introspective modern composition · piano

A quiet room, an English house, and time that will not stop.

It's introspective modern composition, played on the piano, and if I'm honest it's a diary about perpetual time that I decided to score instead of write.

The records — “Perpetuus” — are entries, really. One continuous notebook.

Dispatches

What this life is like

I make music about perpetual time and stillness, and I mean every note — but I won't pretend it's free.

Choosing quiet can look, from outside, like disappearing. Some days the calm I write about is the calm I most need myself.

If you make gentle music and feel overlooked, you are not doing it wrong. That is just the shape of it.

The making of “Perpetuus”

“Perpetuus” began with “perpetuus” as a phrase before it was a record — a small thing I kept circling.

The piano found the shape before I did; I stayed out of the way.

Made small, on purpose.

Domestic materials, lately

Lately everything I write bends back toward domestic materials.

The piano does the thinking here; I only choose what to keep.

I hope it meets you somewhere quiet.

On stage

Every so often I play somewhere tiny around Germany — a back room, a little hall, once a kitchen. Never big, never really advertised. If you'd host one, message me.

Notes on the music

PerpetuusA single mood held for the length of the record — perpetual time, mostly.

On the sound

The piano carries everything here; there's nowhere for it to hide.
